Humax FreeSat HD box maintenance

The following is a guide for anyone in the UK that owns a Humax HB-1100S or HDR-1100S FreeSat HD box who would like to maintain it themselves. This guide is in progress and as I learn more about these boxes and resolve any issues I encounter I will update this article.

The UK Humax Freesat box

The Humax FreeSat HD boxes come in two flavours in the UK: The HB-1100S and the HDR-1100S

The function does not work while retrieving data from the time shift buffer

The hard-drive (hereby referred to as the HDD) inside or attached to your Humax FreeSat box can become corrupt, and although you can playback your recordings you cannot live pause or rewind live programmes without seeing the message "The function does not work while retrieving data from the time shift buffer" appearing at the top of your screen. In order to fix this you will need to reformat your HDD via the Humax Settings menu option. However, this means that you will lose any recordings. To retain your recordings while resolving this problem follow these steps:

  • Power down your Humax box and remove the HDD
  • Connect the HDD to a PC
  • Copy the Video folder to your PC
  • Safely remove the HDD from your PC and reconnect to your Humax box
  • Power up your Humax box
  • Navigate to Settings - System Settings - Storage
  • Select your drive
  • Select Start disk format and enter PIN if set
  • Once the format is complete test that the live pause now works
  • Power down your Humax box and remove the HDD again
  • Connect the HDD to your PC and copy the contents of the backed-up Video folder from your PC to the Video folder on the HDD
  • Safely remove the HDD from your PC and reconnect to your Humax box
  • Test that all your recordings are back and that you can live pause

About me

I am a professional QA Tester. I do not work for Humax. I own two Humax freesat boxes: a HB-1100S single Rx + 1TB Ext HDD, and a HDR-1100S double Rx 1TB Int HDD.
